<image:title>Songs - Shuffle Off To Buffalo</image:title>
<image:caption>Written in 1932 by Al Dubin and Harry Warren for the pre-code hit musical ‘42nd Street’, this playful yet scandalous song references the wearing of ‘panties’ and ‘scanties,’ sex on trains, babies, and getting a divorce in Reno ‘while he still has dough…’ Like I said, scandalous! This song, along with the tap dance step, also called ‘Shuffle Off To Buffalo’, is often referenced in cartoons, TV shows, and movies - including a very creepy version sung by Bette Davis in the 1965 thriller ‘Dead Ringer’. Stick around to the end of the video if you want to check it out. You’ll be glad you did! Added 11/30/24</image:caption>

<image:caption>Written in 1948 by Sid Lipman, Buddy Kaye, and Fred Wise, 'A' You're Adorable uses the full alphabet to describe all the reasons why a young man loves a young woman. While Perry Como and The Fontane Sisters had the most famous version of the song, there are dozens of great covers, many of which are included in this playlist. Some of my favorites include The Muppets (of course), the ever-smarmy Dean Martin, and not one, but three video clips from The Lawrence Welk Show. By far the craziest version in the playlist is Captian Picard (aka Patrick Stewart) goofing around on the set of ‘Star Trek: Next Generation’ performing the song complete with hat and cane. And the best line in the song: "Alphabetically speaking, you're 'okay'.... Be sure to stick around to the end to see my ‘A’ - Adorable grandkids singing ‘We Hope You Liked The Music.’</image:caption>

<image:caption>As a young man, I remember my father-in-law often responding to my call of "Anyone home?" with "Ain't Nobody Here But Us Chickens", which, until I heard this Louis Jordan song, made no sense at all. Part of what I love about this project is finding connections between popular songs from long ago that live on in the people who loved them, even if only in a single phrase. Written in 1946, 'Ain't Nobody Here But Us Chickens' was made famous by the hugely popular Louis Jordan, "King of the Jukebox", a performer who could play, swing, sing, and make you laugh with his sense of humor and love of chickens - he wrote more than one song about them. The playlist includes three recordings by Jordan (1946, 1957, and a live video from 1970), as well as covers that include B.B. King, The Muppets, and a great animated version by Asleep at the Wheel. Thanks for watching and please be safe! B-kawwwwwk! (that would be a chicken’s closing salutation) Added 8/8/20</image:caption>

I’ve added a bit from Miles' performance at the end of the video so stick around! The second video in the playlist includes Mile’s full performance starting at the 2 minute mark. <image:caption>Hold Tight is either about seafood or sex; you decide. Originally recorded by Sidney Bechet, the Andrews Sisters recorded a toned-down version - five days later! - that was a huge hit. Personally, I think both versions are quite mild and probably about sex. Leonard Ware, Bechet's guitarist, wrote the song, with help from two session singers, and Bechet himself apparently made a contribution. The playlist includes the original Bechet and Andrews Sisters versions along with Fats Waller, Tommy Dorsey, Mel Torme, and the modern Andrews Sisters cover groups, The Puppini SIsters and The Swing Dolls.</image:caption>

We all Scream for Ice Cream!” but few people know it comes from a 1927 song that tells the story of a fictitious Eskimo college football team, it’s cheerleader, and the school's fight song. Of course it does! Please forgive the cultural insensitivities common of this era and try to focus on the remarkable fact that to this day people still say: "I Scream. You Scream. So many great covers to choose from for this playlist but my favorites are both of the live Dean Martin shorts, Peaches & Herb, Esther Philips, and Tina Louis from Gilligan's Island. This tune was popularized by The Ink Spots who, despite their very unfortunate name, was one of the finest vocal groups of the time. Whether you need to ‘give someone air’ or 'leave them flat”, your newly minted ex will surely be tickled by the cute vintage phrase you use to say it’s over. Tomlin wrote this hit song in college for his sweetheart who became his wife. He had a remarkable career in music and movies and eventually gave it up to focus on his family. The end of my video includes a short excerpt of Tomlin singing 'The Object of My Affection', his other big hit, in 1958 as a surprise celebrity contestant Groucho Marx’s ‘You Bet Your Life.'</image:caption>

<image:caption>Written in 1936 for 'At the Circus', arguably one of the worst Marx Brothers movies (tied perhaps with 'Big Store'), 'Lydia The Tattooed Lady' is a Groucho classic that sings the praises of Lydia and her many tattoos. There are lots of obscure references in this song so I’ve tried to illustrate the lyrics with vintage graphics and, where possible, actual tattoos. Stick around to the end where I’ve added a post-script verse to the song about Claudia, Lydia’s granddaughter. This video is something of an homage to Groucho Marx and Margaret Dumont, a comedy match made in heaven. She was the perfect foil for his unique style of insult humor, meeting all his jokes with an aloof smile and air of disregard that somehow put them on an even footing. Dumont said of her work with Groucho: I'm a straight lady, the best in Hollywood. There is an art to playing the straight role. You must build up your man, but never top him, never steal the laughs. Groucho referred to Dumont as practically the fifth Marx Brother. There are so many great Groucho/Dumont moments that I decided to include some of the best at the very, very end of the video, literally after the ’The End’ graphic. I encourage you to stick around. The song became a #1 hit for bandleader Ted Rito Fio and remains one of the most performed tunes in the Hapa Haole style - just ask anyone with a ukulele! The popularity of the song led to the opening of a little grass shack gift shop in Kona and during WWII soldiers stationed in Hawaii who were not allowed to write letters home would send photographs of themselves in front of the shop to let their families know where they were. Take a listen even if just to learn about the song My Little Grass Shack was based on. I, for one, had no idea! The song is about, well, a pessimistic character with a crab apple face, and includes probably the meanest lyric ever penned (at least until 1940): “Why do we want him in the human race? The pessimistic character with the crab apple face.” Wow….. While I know the Three Stooges aren’t universally loved, I must admit to watching plenty of their movie shorts on TV in the 1960s and still find them ridiculous and funny. It wasn’t until the 1970’s when the influential Dr. Demento (the man responsible for discovering ‘'Weird Al’ Yankovic!) featured the song on his popular radio show reviving interest and turning it into a hit that reached #30 on the Billboard Charts. I first discovered this song in Jr. High School (of course) and have loved it ever since. The chef appeared to be the guilty guy. The doorman also acted quite suspicious; but he coyly said: “It surely wasn’t I!” No spoiler alert here. You'll just have to listen to the end... <image:caption>The term “Harvest Moon" refers to the full, bright moon that occurs closest to the start of autumn and dates from the time before electricity, when farmers depended on the moon's light to harvest their crops late into the night - and, according to the lyrics of Shine On Harvest Moon, young couples relied on the same moonlight to ‘stay outdoors and spoon!’ Scandalous! This popular song was penned in 1908 by Nora Bayes and Jack Norworth, the married Vaudeville couple, and was debuted by them in the Ziegfeld Follies of the same year. Shine On Harvest Moon has been recorded and performed by countless artists, but the incomparable Leon Redbone remains my favorite. The dancing skeletons in the video come from Disney's very first Silly Symphony, Dancing Skeletons, also from 1929! I have a strong personal connection to the song since my grandpa Seymour, a very funny man who ended every joke with, “That’s a joke, son!” would say: “When it get’s to hot for comfort and you can’t get ice cream cones, T’aint no sin to take off your skin and dance around in your bones!” It wasn’t until many, MANY years later when my good friend Janet Klein, also a performer of vintage tunes, told me during a visit that this was from a song and played the Lee Morse version for me from a cassette she happened to have in her car. I like to think about the people of the era gathered around their hand-cranked Victrola blushing or laughing, or both, as the word ‘Dam’ was sung over and over again! WARNING: Sometimes I like to add my own verses to these old songs and 'The Whole Dam Family' was begging for a final verse to wrap up the story, so, I wrote one. So if you are a Tin Pan Alley purists who might be offended by this, I have one thing to say: 'I don’t give a Dam!</image:caption>

Listen as the protagonist tells it like it is: "You tell me I'm your Sugar Pie. Yeah? You swear you'll never tell I lie. Yeah!?! You even say you hope to die. Yeah!?!! <image:caption>1920’s America was a country of immigrants and "Yes! We Have No Bananas", written by two Jewish-American songwriters, Frank Silver and Irving Cohn, is about a Greek-American produce merchant still finding his way around the English language. As the story goes, Silver was in Long Island with his orchestra and went to a fruit stand where the owner answered every inquiry with a resounding “Yes!” For example, if asked: "Do you have any bananas?”, he’d answer: "Yes! We have no bananas.” The song was a huge hit and has been part of American pop culture ever since. The playlist includes performances The Pied Pipers in full technicolor glory, a Max Fleischer animation, and Sesame Street's Swedish Chef having a grand tie at the grocery store. Please share with any banana loving friends!</image:caption>

<image:caption>'You Must Have Been A Beautiful Baby' was written in 1938 by Harry Warren and Johnny Mercer. As much as I love this song, I still marvel that there was a time when no one thought twice to write lyrics about a kindergartner who ‘drove the little boys wild.’ Yikes! If you’re wondering who the babies/actresses are in the video, they are, in order: Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor, Natalie Wood, Veronica Lake, Margaret O'Brien, Shirley Temple, Heddy Lamar, and Rita Hayworth. Be sure to stay to the end where there’s a really great TV clip from 1963 of Perry Como and Dinah Shore really having fun with the song.</image:caption>

<image:caption>My first exposure to Virginia O’Brien was a short cameo in the Marx Brothers’ 1941 film Big Store, and I’ve never forgotten it; possibly because it was the funniest moment in the movie. As a salesclerk in the children’s department, O’Brien demonstrates a bassinet to a customer by singing 'Rock-a-Bye Baby' that burst into a hilarious deadpan swing. It’s a short bit but perfectly highlights O’Brien trademark deadpan comedy that made her a staple of MGM Musicals. This playlist includes the 'Big Store' came as well as ‘Salome', 'Did I Get Stinkin’ At The Savoy', and the creepily hilarious 'Say We’re Sweethearts Again'; and, of course, many more.
